What is OptiLight?

OptiLight by Lumenis is an intense pulsed light (IPL) device that received FDA De Novo authorization to improve signs of dry eye disease due to meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). It is intended for moderate to severe disease and for skin types I to IV. Short pulses of light are applied to the skin around the eyes while your eyes are protected. The treatment does not involve incisions.

Why Dry Eye Happens

The meibomian glands in your eyelids make the oil layer that helps keep tears from evaporating. When these glands are blocked or inflamed, tears can evaporate too quickly. Symptoms can include burning, grittiness, watering, tired eyes, and blurry vision that comes and goes. Artificial tears relieve symptoms for some patients, but they may not address a gland problem.

Who May Be Considered

OptiLight may be considered for patients with moderate to severe dry eye disease due to MGD. Dr. Shusko first performs a dry eye evaluation and reviews your eyelids, skin type, medications, and eye history. Some patients are not candidates and will be discussed during the dry eye evaluation. Not all dry eye disease needs IPL. Many possible treatment options and strategies will be presented during the initial evaluation depending on exam and imaging findings.

What to Expect with OptiLight

  • Evaluation: an exam of your eyelids, oil glands, and tear film. Testing may include slit lamp evaluation, fluorescein staining, lissamine green staining, infrared meibography, non-invasive tear break-up time (NITBUT), blepharitis grading, meibum (oil) grading, and blinking evaluation.
  • Treatment time: about 15 to 20 minutes, with protective eyewear.
  • Course of treatment: a series of 4 sessions spaced 2-4 weeks apart. Maintenance visits may be recommended after the initial series.
  • Comfort: Many patients describe a sensation of warmth or light tapping. Cooling gel is used, and your eyes are protected. Comfort varies from patient to patient.
  • Results: Dry eye relief is gradual and variable, and not guaranteed. Your plan will continue to include drops, eyelid hygiene, or other therapy.

Dry eye evaluations are medical visits and billed to your medical insurance. OptiLight sessions are not covered by medical or vision insurance currently and are self-pay.
